Barnacle Glue: A Natural Adhesive for Biomedical Innovation
Shrutika Sawant
(PhD Student)
While adhesion in wet environments is difficult to achieve, many marine organisms can naturally stick to surfaces underwater. One such organism is the barnacle, which uses specialised proteins to firmly attach to surfaces as varied as rocks, the skin of whales and metal boats. Harnessing the adhesive power of these barnacle glue (or ‘cement’) proteins could create enormous benefit in biomedicine, such as in developing new surgical adhesives.
