Squid Sex: Alternative Reproductive Tactics (ARTs) of Male Squid
Domonique Gillen
(PhD Researcher)
Sexual dimorphism is commonly seen the animal kingdom, and squid are no different. In squid, two size groups of males are referred to as 'sneakers' and 'consorts', and their mating tactics result in to two very different fertilization environments. My research explores how to tell these two types of males apart without observing them in their natural habitat.
Vampire Parasites!
Eve O'Kelly
(PhD Student)
Blood-feeding parasites infect 24% of people worldwide. Our research studies liver fluke parasite enzymes utilizing bacteria as enzyme production factories alongside computer modelling to help develop new treatments.
The Kneecap Effect: Can Films Change Language Ideologies?
Sacha Wood
(Master of Literature Student)
There have been successful documentaries about the failures of the Irish education system. There have also been successful Irish-language fiction films. But the Kneecap film arguably represents a new filmic approach to language renewal, which dramatises the tensions between different ideas about the Irish language. With humour at its heart, my research explores how Kneecap uses narrative and comedy to create an effective language-revitalising film.
