Bacteria, cancer and cats- is there a connection??

Alison Lee (ICAT Fellow and Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist)
Feline oral squamous cell carcinoma (FOSCC) is the most common tumour that develops in cat’s mouths. This type of cancer is usually incurable and leads to animals being put to sleep. A similar tumour occurs in people which often arises due to tobacco or alcohol consumption. However, gum disease might also play a role. While cats don’t consume tobacco/alcohol, they frequently develop gum disease. My research will investigate if mouth bacteria in cats are associated with the growth of tumours. Any interesting results may also open up new avenues of research in humans.
