Smarter Medicines for the Smartest Cancer
Almudena Moreno Borrallo
(PhD Researcher at Trinity College Dublin)
My research is focused on fighting brain cancer, specifically glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive and hard-to-treat brain tumors. I’m working with tiny, smart drug carriers called biomaterials. Think of them as microscopic delivery trucks that transport cancer-fighting drugs straight to the tumor. By improving how these drug carriers work, we can deliver treatments more directly, reduce harmful side effects, and slow down or even stop the cancer from growing.

Sweetening the treat: improving cancer medicines with sugar engineering
Ioscani Jimenez del Val
(Assistant Professor, School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering, University College Dublin)
I will be talking about biological cancer medicines and how their sugars can be engineered to improve their cancer-killing ability.

Magnesium-based 3D-printed Implants: A solution for paediatric Bone Repair
Ava Azadi
(PhD Student, University College Dublin)
I'm developing 3D-printed bioresorbable Mg implants for orthopaedic use. They dissolve in the body, avoiding a second surgery, unlike today’s common non-resorbable implants.

Plastic from Trees
Jessica De Micco
(PhD at TCD)
Due to the complexity and variability of its structure, combustion remains the most common use of lignin. However, lignin-based plastics present a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based materials because of their renewability, flame retardancy, and antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The present research work aims to fragment lignin to recover high value chemicals. Lignin-based monomers, monolignols, have the potential to replace the conventional plastic that is not biodegradable and is causing environmental pollution.
