At the Beating Heart of Valve Lifespan
Rachel Cahalane
(Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Research Fellow, University of Galway)
I research how our body interacts with replacement heart valves, and how this response may contribute to their failure. If we can understand more about replacement valve failure, we can design ways to make them last longer.
Reducing scarring using the mathematics of skin
Hannah Conroy Broderick
(Part-time Lecturer, School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, University of Galway)
Surgeons recommend making incisions in the direction that skin is most taut to reduce scarring. This varies between people and using mathematics we can help find the best way to make incisions.
