The characteristics of every cell are based on the genome. Mutations—changes in the structure of genes or chromosomes—can be very dangerous. Mutations and chromosomal alterations are hallmarks of cancer; on the other hand, cell division cannot continue if there is too much genetic instability, and the cell dies. What effects are observed after damage is done to the genome, for example in the case of irradiation, when radiation energy breaks DNA, the molecule that makes up chromosomes? And what harm is done to the irradiated body?

Huntington's disease is a rare, inherited condition that typically affects people between 30 and 50 years of age. Cells begin to degenerate in the part of the brain that controls body movement (the striatum). There is a premanifest period in individuals who carry the genetic mutation, before the physical movement symptoms appear. During this time, non-physical symptoms, psychiatric and cognitive, can emerge. This research focuses on the relationships between language ability, apathy, emotion recognition, and the volume of the caudate striatum in individuals in the premanifest stage of the disease.

The eye grows out of the brain in the womb and is the only part of the body where we can directly observe blood vessels and neural tissue. With recent advances, we can examine these tissues using new technologies and artificial intelligence. In this talk, I will discuss how ophthalmology sits at the intersection of biology, physics, and optics, and how the eye can be used to assess the health of the brain and the cardiovascular system.
