Earth is a microbial planet: microbes have been around for billions of years, they power the world's biogeochemical cycles and have conquered even the most extreme environments. Yet the vast majority of microbial life remains 'dark matter'. I will discuss how we can use modern techniques (and very big computers) to chart the 'terra incognita' of microbial life and its multifold impacts on our microbial world.
