Some of the most important science happens behind the scenes. This event explores the hidden systems shaping modern life: the environmental cost of big data in biological research, the need for cybersecurity in critical infrastructure, and how research improves animal welfare on farms. From servers and farms to secure networks, discover how science builds safer, smarter, more sustainable systems.
Sustainable Practices In Biological Data Science
Ambarnil Ghosh
(Industrial Partnerships & Networks Coordinator)
Biological Research is generating more data than ever before, but this comes with a hidden environmental cost from energy-hungry supercomputers to electronic waste. This talk will explore how scientists can make their data practices greener, from smarter computing to reducing lab waste, and why these changes matter for both science and the planet. Join us to discover simple steps anyone can take to make biological research more sustainable!

How science can improve farming practices: Lessons from calf rearing
Gabi Marquette
(Technical Officer UCD)
In this talk, I’ll use calf disbudding as an example to show how research can help farmers make better everyday decisions, and how those decisions can shape future farming guidelines. By studying how horn buds develop in calves, my research explores how biology can help identify the best time to carry out routine practices and improve outcomes on farms.
