From Surface to Seabed, and Everything in Between

Tue 19 May Doors 6:30 pm
Event 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The Liberty Bar, 92/93 S Main St, Centre,
Cork T12Y2CC
Dive into an evening of surprising science at Pint of Science, where the coast, the ocean, and even our waste reveal powerful stories. Discover how the humble limpet inspires safer coastal design, explore the hidden landscapes of the ocean floor through seabed mapping, and follow the fascinating (and sometimes messy!) reality of monitoring Ireland’s grey seals, from drones to dung. You’ll also uncover how cutting-edge bio-refining is transforming waste into sustainable fertilisers. It’s an eye-opening journey from shorelines to seabeds, showing how science in unexpected places can help protect…

The Seaweed Revolution: Turning Ocean Greens into Future Bio-Resources

Rifna Elenjikkal Jerome (Postdoctoral Researcher)
For years, we’ve relied on fossil fuels to power our lives, but that convenience has come at a serious cost to the planet. As we search for cleaner alternatives, scientists have turned to land-based biomass like agricultural waste (think straw). While promising, these options still rely on land, water, and energy, which limits how sustainable they can really be. Now, imagine a resource that grows quickly, needs no farmland, no freshwater, and no fertilisers - just the ocean. That’s seaweed. This humble marine plant is packed with valuable bioactive compounds that can be used in food, pharmaceuticals, and a wide range of industries. In this talk, I’ll take you from our fossil fuel past to an ocean-powered future, exploring how seaweed could help us create cleaner products, reduce our environmental impact, and rethink the way we use natural resources, all thanks to what’s growing just beneath the waves.

The Limpet: Nature’s Unsung Hero

Louise Firth (Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sustainability)
