Join us in Doyle's as we delve into the weird and wonderful world of weather! Find out how space weather impacts us, new solutions to climate change and how to use mathematics to improve storm predictions.

Space weather: chasing solar storms

Eruptions of particles, radiation, and plasma from the Sun can impact a range of vital technologies on Earth and in near-Earth space via a phenomenon called space weather. From impacts to power, radio communications, and GPS, to increased astronaut radiation exposure, and even the chance of seeing aurorae here in Ireland, space weather has captured the worlds attention. As a space weather scientist I try to predict the solar storms that cause all these disruptions, just like we forecast rain and snow storms here on the ground.

The mathematics of storm surges

Dr Nicole Beisiegel (Irish Research Council Government Of Ireland Postdoctoral Research)
@NicoleBeisiegel
I use mathematics to improve storm surge predictions. These better predictions allow us to study the effects of storm surges on our coasts - from wave run up and flooding to less obvious impacts such as moving, large boulders on cliff tops
